I paesaggi storici del marmo sono l'argomento del Calendario del Parco 2023
The historic ladscapes of marble are the topic of the 2023 Park Calendar



La cartoline del primo Novecento, con le straordinarie immagini di allora, sono una fonte inesauribile di informazioni per documentare un momento storico cruciale del paesaggio del marmo nelle Alpi Apuane, durante la lunga transizione tra l’età pre-industriale e quella post-industriale attuale. Il segno più evidente di tale fase – caratterizzata da profondi sconvolgimenti socio-economici e da dure lotte operaie – va individuato nell’introduzione del filo elicoidale e nel suo progressivo affermarsi nell’estrazione del marmo in cava. L’innovazione tecnologica introdotta a monte si riverberava lungo tutta la filiera produttiva a valle, con una maggiore produzione estrattiva nelle Alpi Apuane e dunque con un maggior consumo di una risorsa naturale non riproducibile. Tutto questo spingeva poi a ricercare nei fondovalle e in pianura, ulteriori spazi da urbanizzare per i servizi di trasporto, i piazzali di stoccaggio, gli opifici di trasformazione e i laboratori artistici del marmo.
I tagli con filo elicoidale squadravano le pareti rocciose e cancellavano le tracce di precedenti distacchi a mano di blocchi che il cavatore aveva eseguito con la forza di martelli, subbie, picconi, cunei, seghe, leve, ecc. Nello stesso tempo, nuove costruzioni, sottese tra art nouveau e razionalismo, sostituivano e dilatavano il paesaggio industriale urbano del marmo. Oggi, stessa sorte subiscono i segni e i manufatti di quell’età impetuosa e febbrile, sollecitandoci la ricerca di nuovi equilibri tra trasformazione sostenibile e conservazione culturale, all’interno di nuove strategie di riuso innovativo e di salvaguardia diversificata del patrimonio materiale e immateriale, per consentire alla memoria locale di proiettarsi correttamente nel futuro. I documenti e le testimonianze di archeologia industriale spiegano bene e meglio di qualsiasi libro di come la storia delle Alpi Apuane sia stata inghiottita in una storia del marmo e di come lo stesso territorio stenti ancora ad affrancarsi da un rapporto di antica dipendenza da questa monocoltura produttiva che l’ha plasmato a tal fine.

Il Calendario 2023 sarà ufficialmente presentato sabato 25 febbraio durante la festa annuale della CETS.


The illustrated postcards of the early twentieth century, with the extraordinary images of the time, are an endless source of information to document a crucial historical moment of the marble landscape in the Apuan Alps, during the long transition between the pre-industrial age and the current post-industrial age. The most evident sign of this phase - characterized by profound socio-economic upheavals and harsh workers' struggles - can be identified in the introduction of the helicoidal wire and its progressive affirmation in the extraction of marble in the quarry. The technological innovation introduced upstream reverberated along the entire production chain downstream, with greater extractive production in the Apuan Alps and therefore with greater consumption of a non-reproducible natural resource. All this then led to the search in the valley bottoms and in the plains for further spaces to be urbanized for transport services, storage yards, processing factories and artistic marble workshops.
The cutting with helicoidal wire squared the rock walls and erased the traces of previous manual detachments of blocks that the quarryman had performed by force of hammers, beams, picks, wedges, saws, levers, etc. Meanwhile, new constructions, subtending between art nouveau and rationalism, replaced and expanded the urban industrial landscape of marble. Today, the signs and artefacts of that impetuous and feverish age suffer the same fate, urging us to search for new balance between sustainable transformation and cultural conservation, within new strategies of innovative reuse and diversified protection of the tangible and intangible heritage, to allow local memory to correctly project into the future. The documents and remains of industrial archaeology explain well and better than any book how the history of the Apuan Alps has been swallowed in a history of marble and how the same territory is still struggling to free itself from a relationship of ancient dependence on this productive monoculture that shaped it to that end.

The 2023 Calendar will be officially presented on Saturday 25 February during the annual CETS celebration.
